About Creatures & Ives

Starting April 1st, I will be attempting to create a Creatures & Ives image every day for 91 days (a quarter if you will). It was a goal that began in my office here at Snagajob. We would each create something, anything, for 91 days and then at the end of the 3 months have a showing of our work.

After considering several options I decided to go with this. I came up with it after looking at a tattered Currier & Ives book we had sitting in a give away pile. As I thumbed through the pages I noticed that many of the drawings had scenes and characters that were extremely active; ice skating, sled races, fire fighting, hunting, etc. The sledding scenes looked as though they were running from something rather than racing. I did a quick proof of concept (see below) to see if it was viable.

It wasn't too hard - my kids thought it was funny - and I was out of other ideas. So now the question is, can it be sustained? I've found dozens of hi-res C&I images online and many more that are medium-res (not sure if those will fly). I'll get as far as I can before I crank up the scanner and go book hunting.

So for what it's worth I hope you enjoy these. Even more so, I hope I make it 91 days.

I find your desecration of fine works of art to be abhorrent, detestable and downright repulsive. These artists tried to bring a slice of current politics and daily life to the viewer through incredible talent that, to be perfectly honest, shows more aesthetic prowess to me than all the works of the Renaissance combined.

But now that I take another look, these are wicked cool. Monsters make everything better (except when they are eating puppies. Monsters love puppies, they hate kittens.)

I can’t wait to see all 91. Keep it up!

Based on your name I assume you are a Dutch collector of some sort? I’m glad these are evoking an emotion in you Mr. VanGoode. Tell Heather and the kids hi. :)

These are great Chip. You can find more at loc.gov. I deal with a lot these images. It was funny to see some of the ones I used put in a different light.

Thanks Keith – this is a great resource. Perfect timing because I’m getting a little low on hi-res images.

Well-conceived. Funly executed. I love them. What will happen after 91 days? You might just have to keep going or find a way for these creations to live on.

These made my day! I especially liked “Family Devotion” and “Bible and Temperance (rolling a hoop! Really???)”. And yes, those race scenes do look like something’s in hot pursuit. Love to see what you can do with other artists…Goya (“The Naked Maja”), David (“Death of Marat”), “The Divine Comedy” series by Dore…the possiblities are endless.

These are just too cool! If I wanted to get permission to reprint these and have them done onto canvass, would that be something you might consider? All credit properly attributed, of course…

Thanks Katie. I am planning on doing some prints and will post a link here on the site. I have much higher resolution than what I am posting here – so if you let me know which day(s) you are interested in I will make sure I include those.

    Thanks so much,
    Chip

Simply awesome. I love these. Makes me want to scour garage sales for old canvas prints and add some fun to them!
